All technology hardware purchases must be shipped to your name at c/o Sharon Zastrow, 111 Dodge St, Watertown, WI 53094 to be inventoried. It is a very good idea to have CSS take a look at the specifications of the hardware you intend to purchase to check for compatibility, quality, and supportability. Failure to do so may result in your being on your own in maintaining the hardware.
Though it is possible to purchase $300-400 systems, experience has shown us that the total cost of ownership (TCO) is much higher in most cases due to inferior parts, lack of manufacturer support/warranty, and other such reasons. Check with CSS prior to any computer purchases as they can get the best deal, and ensure that they can support it for you.
Since 2003, WUSD has standardized on Windows machines due to our ability to service them, the lower cost of ownership, and savings inherent to standardizing on one platform (e.g., 35% saving over the life of the systems according to the Gartner Group). Any desire to purchase anything other than a Windows computer from Dell or Gateway MUST be approved through CSS, and justified as an essential solution. Upon approval, CSS will notify you of limitations in their ability to service those systems.
